Blood cancer, particularly leukemia, remains a silent but deadly challenge, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) like Tanzania. Despite being one of the most common cancers globally, awareness about leukemia—its risk factors, symptoms, and treatments—remains alarmingly low in many communities. In Tanzania, a combination of limited healthcare infrastructure, cultural misconceptions, and stigma prevents many individuals from seeking early medical intervention. This often results in delayed diagnoses and poorer outcomes. With fewer than 50 haematologists serving a population of over 60 million, expertise in diagnosing and treating blood cancers is concentrated in a handful of referral centres, leaving primary healthcare facilities ill-equipped to identify and manage these conditions. This lack of awareness and resources compounds the challenges faced by patients and their families. Without robust educational initiatives, advocacy efforts, and access to timely care, many individuals remain uninformed about the symptoms, risk factors, and treatment options for blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma.
